The people
Thuisabortus.nl is an initiative of Peter Leusink, general practitioner and sexologist NVVS, on an idea from patient organisation Ava Foundation. We believe it is important for unwanted pregnant women to have a choice of different forms of good abortion care. An online option increases accessibility to this care in addition to access to GPs and abortion clinics. For pregnant women who have already made their choice, an early termination of pregnancy is advantageous because it reduces the severity of the symptoms and reduces the - albeit small - risk of complications.
The general practitioners and gynaecologists (in training) affiliated with Thuisabortus.nl are all trained and authorised to prescribe the abortion pill. Some doctors and a midwife do not prescribe but do conduct consultations.

The doctors of Thuisabortus.nl provide online abortion care in day practice. Their patients can use a GP clinic in the evenings and weekends on the rare occasions when it is needed. GPs who provide face-to-face abortion care during the day also do so in this way. All GP surgeries have been briefed on what care is needed for medication-induced abortion. This is the same as for complications due to miscarriage.
Our vision
Online prescribing gives women who want it more control over their abortion. Scientifically research demonstrate that it is as effective and safe as a face-to-face consultation. Hundreds of thousands of women with unwanted pregnancies from many countries have already experienced this. It is legal in the Netherlands.
We can imagine that the online form of abortion care raises questions. We have compiled these questions with their answers in the following document.
Resources
Our GPs work according to the ‘Guide to GP care in the event of an unwanted pregnancy’, a directive for all general practitioners in the Netherlands, which came about through collaboration between abortion doctors, gynaecologists, senior general practitioners, a lawyer, a representative of a women's organisation and a pharmacist. Some of us collaborated on this guideline and provide training on it to other GPs.
In addition, we rely on the Directive Counselling when considering termination of pregnancy of the Dutch Society of Abortionists, on the WHO Guideline and the NICE Guideline.
